چکیده

Inflation Adjustment and Labour Market Structures: Evidence from a Multi-Country Study An empirical analysis of the impact of labour market structures on the response of inflation to macroeconomic shocks is presented. Results based on a 20 country panel show that if labour market coordination is high, the effect on inflation of movements in unemployment, import prices, tax rates and productivity is dampened, both on impact and dynamically. In contrast, monopoly power in labour supply, measured by the percentage unionisation of the workforce, appears to amplify the response of inflation to its reduced form determinants. These findings are attributed to the behaviour of wages following movements in demandand supply-side conditions. JEL Classification: E31, J51

Labour-Market Effects of Intra-Industry Trade: Evidence for the United Kingdom

According to the “smooth adjustment hypothesis”, the labour-market adjustment costs entailed by trade liberalisation are lower if trade expansion is intra-industry rather than interindustry in nature. In this paper, we study the link between trade and labour market changes in UK manufacturing industries during the 1980s. We use industry-level measures of unemployment duration and wage variabili...

Macroeconomic implications of Downward Wage Rigidities∗

Growth of unemployment, employment, vacancies and wages exhibit strong asymmetries between expansionary and contractionary phases of the business cycle. This is also very apparent during the crisis of 2008-2009 for the US and European countries. In this paper we analyse to what degree downward wage rigidities in the bargaining process affect other variables of the labour market, output, inflati...

Diffusion of the Internet and low inflation in the information economy

The adherents of the so-called New Economy claim that we are entering a new era with high output growth, low unemployment and low inflation. Increased productivity growth combined with sluggish adjustment ...
